That’s me. I actually enjoy challenging the status quo. Not just for the sake of a challenge, I am usually am goaded by illogical reasoning or no detectable reasoning behind a rule or standard practice. I don’t really like debate. I just need to understand the rationale. If you are looking for a ‘yes woman’ I am not it. I ask lots of questions and want to know the facts behind what I hear and read. Often, I feel like a fish out of water, like everyone else is on the same page about something and I just don’t get it. Or maybe I’m the only one who speaks up? What I do know is that it can feel pretty lonely at times. It comes from a strong sense of justice. If I see or hear something that oversteps someone’s rights or takes advantage of a person who can’t defend themselves, I just can’t keep from speaking up. I have this deep need to know that everyone is treated with respect and value.
Going against the grain can be lonely but if you’re an independent thinker, it’s necessary. Be wise about when and who to share with but don’t keep your perspective to yourself. The world does not need anymore clones. Goodness knows we have enough people who just accept what they hear through the media and assume if everyone says the same thing, it must be true. Ugh!! What we need are more independent thinkers to speak up against injustice and share different perspectives. You have unique gifts, talents and a story to share. Someone needs to hear your story and be encouraged. Someone needs your gifts and talents to accomplish their mission. Your work may hold the key to solving a problem waiting to be fixed. Your perspective matters and your input is needed. You have a unique purpose or function in this world and a responsibility to fulfill it.
Take action: Notice when you hear or see something that doesn’t sit right with you. Think about why and what questions are coming up for you. This just may be connected to your unique purpose, what you bring to the table.
