I recently listened to the audio version of Marie Forleo’s book, Everything Is Figureoutable. I really like her presence and her grit in how she delivers her message. She is a combination of tough love, encouragement and cross-fit trainer. Great book, but if you don’t like hearing the F-bomb this one may not be your thing.
Anyway, here are a few bullet points I really liked to help you get at your true desires and make some progress.
- 10 Year Test: Think forward to ten years in the future. What do you hope to have accomplished by then? What do you want your life to include and look like? What career are you in? Where do you live? How do you spend your weekends? Another way of thinking about this is: What will you regret not doing if you never took action?
- What I really want is… This is a daily writing prompt for you to use for 7 days. Set a timer for 10 minutes and just write, without editing, answering the prompt, “What I really want is….” On the eighth day, review what you’ve written. Use a highlighter to find common themes or ideas that repeat or are related. Next, capture the highlighted items on a clean page and see what you’ve got. This might be a good one to do each year as you do your annual life planning exercise and goal setting.
- Kill perfectionism: The biggest enemy of progress is perfectionism. It keeps us stuck in planning and revising mode. It has to stop or we will never release anything into the world! The point is that DONE is better than perfect. Think progress not perfectionism. Keep pushing yourself to take the next step and then the next.
